2013 Challenge Trophy Winners
W Salter & Son has won one of Australia’s most prestigious wine awards, The 2013 Visy Great Australian Shiraz Challenge Trophy with its 2012 Pepperjack Shiraz.
The Graphix Labels & Packaging Trophy for the Best Shiraz under $25.00.was awarded to Ingoldby for their 2012 Ingoldby Shiraz.
The winners were announced by Rob Gell • Environmental Geographer & Educator, Sustainability strategist and Media consultant, at a gala Black Tie Dinner, at the historic Tahbilk Winery on Friday 1st November.
342 wines competed in the 19th Challenge with vintages ranging from 2004-2013 with 243 wines from SA, 66 from Vic, 22 from WA, 9 from NSW, 1 from QLD & 1 from ACT.
The trophy and medal results – 2 Trophies, 10 Gold’s, 78 Silvers & 125 Bronze medals.
The 2013 Judging panel consisted of Gary Baldwin (Chairman), Sue Bell, Simon Osicka, Jeni Port, Victor Nash and Travis Clydesdale.
Gary Baldwin – Chairman’s comments
This is my third year as chairman of judges at the Visy Great Shiraz Challenge and perhaps contrary to popular belief it doesn’t get easier to choose the best wines when you are faced with such an impressive array of wines from all over Australia. I would also like offer a very sincere vote of thanks to my five fellow judges. Their task was formidable, with over 340 wines to taste in two days and with a brief to select the best Australian Shiraz out of the pack.
